Certified Plumbing & Drains

Plumbing emergencies can strike at any time, and how you respond in the first few minutes can make the difference between a minor inconvenience and a major disaster. Every homeowner in Macomb County should know basic emergency plumbing measures that can help minimize damage while waiting for professional help to arrive. Being prepared doesn’t require plumbing expertise — just some basic knowledge and a calm head.

Know Your Shut-Off Valves

The single most important thing every homeowner should know is the location of their main water shut-off valve. In a plumbing emergency — a burst pipe, a major leak, or a flooding situation — turning off the main water supply is the fastest way to stop water damage from spreading. In most Macomb County homes, the main shut-off valve is located in the basement near where the water supply line enters the house, or near the water meter.

In addition to the main valve, familiarize yourself with the individual shut-off valves for each fixture. Toilets, sinks, and washing machines typically have their own shut-off valves nearby. If the emergency is isolated to one fixture, shutting off just that valve allows you to stop the problem while still having water available in the rest of your home. Water heaters also have shut-off valves for both the water supply and the gas or electricity that powers them.

Common Plumbing Emergencies and What to Do

Burst pipe: Turn off the main water supply immediately. Open faucets to drain remaining water from the pipes and relieve pressure. If the burst pipe is near electrical outlets or your electrical panel, turn off the electricity to that area. Begin removing water with towels, mops, or a wet/dry vacuum. Call a plumber right away.

Overflowing toilet: Remove the tank lid and push the flapper down to stop water from entering the bowl. Turn off the toilet’s shut-off valve, located on the wall behind the toilet. If the overflow has stopped, try plunging. If it continues or if you suspect a sewer line problem, call a professional.

Sewer backup: Stop using all water in the house. Avoid contact with the backed-up water. Keep children and pets away from the area. Open windows for ventilation. Do not attempt to clean up sewage yourself — call a professional plumber immediately.

Water heater leak: Turn off the gas or electricity to the water heater. Turn off the cold water supply valve on top of the unit. If the leak is severe, connect a garden hose to the drain valve and direct water to a floor drain or outside. Call a plumber to assess the unit.

Build a Plumbing Emergency Kit

Keep a basic plumbing emergency kit accessible in your home. Include a plunger for each bathroom, a pipe wrench, plumber’s tape, a bucket, old towels, and a flashlight. Most importantly, keep the phone number of a trusted emergency plumber where every family member can find it.
